1822 – The Liszt family moves to Vienna
1822 – Carl Czerny begins teaching Liszt
1822? – Liszt learns counterpoint and score reading from Salieri
1822 – First composition published: "Variation uber einen Walzer von Diabelli"
1822 – First public concerts in Vienna
1823 – April 13, Liszt meets Beethoven, and receives the “kiss of consecration”

1847 – Liszt meets Princess Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein and falls in love

The 1850s

1853 – Liszt has a romantic relationship with Agnes Street-Klindworth
1854 – August-October: composes the Faust Symphony
1854 – Caroline is stripped of Russian citizenship for failing to return for a summons
1855 – Liszt publishes his essay on Berlioz's "Harold" Symphony
1859 – Liszt resigns from his post as Kappelmeister
1859 – December: Daniel Liszt dies

The 1860s

Liszt in Rome
1860 – The Vatican annuls Caroline’s former marriage
1861 – October 22: Caroline and Liszt attempt to marry in Rome, but are stopped by the Vatican
1862 – Blandine dies from complications after childbirth
1863 – Liszt retreats to a monastery in Monte Mario and prepares to take holy orders
1865 – April 25: Liszt is tonsured, becoming known as abbé Liszt. Moves into the Vatican
1866 – Liszt moves into the Francesca Romana
1866 – Finishes his oratorio Christus
1868 – Liszt travels to Lucerne to confront Wagner about the latter's relationship with Cosima
1869 – Returns to live in Weimar

The 1870s

1870 – Cosima marries Wagner, but this is after her daughter Isolde is born (noticing a family trend here?)
1871 – Liszt accepts the title of Royal Hungarian Counsellor to Emperor Franz Joseph
1875 – Appointed first president of the National Hungarian Royal Academy of Music
1879 – The Catholic Church makes Liszt an honorary canon of Albano

The 1880s

1881 – Liszt falls down a flight of stairs and becomes very ill
1886 – April: Liszt returns to England
1886 – Liszt is reunited with his daughter Cosima in Paris
1886 – July 19: in Luxembourg Liszt gives his last ever public recital
1886 – July 31: Liszt dies of… old age? Fever? The death certificate says heart infarction
1886 – August 3: the burial of Liszt
